Arsenal fans point the finger at Mesut Özil as late Tom Cleverley goal wins it for Watford

"The man is a waste of space"

Tom Cleverley’s late, late winner at Vicarage Road saw Arsenal fall to their third defeat of the season on Saturday evening.

Arsene Wenger’s men had taken the lead in the first half through Per Mertesacker – a lead they kept until Troy Deeney levelled from the spot with less than 20 minutes still to play. Replays indicated that the awarding of the penalty was controversial, with Richarlison appearing to go down without drawing contact from Hector Bellerin.

Cleverley then made matters worse for Arsenal in stoppage time, when he tucked away the final goal of the game when the ball rebounded to him in the area.

After the game, some Arsenal supporters pointed to the performance of Mesut Özil, who came into the game as a second half substitute with the score 1-0 to Arsenal. Seconds before Watford’s penalty was awarded, he squandered a great chance to double his side’s lead, his shot saved by Heurelho Gomes in the Watford goal.

Many Arsenal fans expressed their frustration at the missed opportunity on Twitter…
