Antoine Griezmann’s arrival at Manchester United could spell the end for Henrikh Mkhitaryan

After recent performances, perhaps this won't come as a surprise

It’s time for more Antoine Griezmann to Manchester United gossip. Oh good.

As we all know, the French international didn’t get his big money move to Old Trafford in the summer, despite it seeming mightily close at one stage.

Although a transfer ban for Atletico Madrid prompted Griezmann to stay put, reports that United want to resurrect the move are again on the rise. The latest one comes from L’Equipe, who, much like all the other reports on the subject in recent weeks, reckon United will face competition for the player’s signature.

They credit Barcelona and Real Madrid with interest in the player, though do explain that Jose Mourinho is determined not to miss out on him for a second time. Other factors, such as his friendship with Paul Pogba and the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of his boyhood hero, David Beckham, are also listed as reasons why Griezmann might finally get his move to Manchester.

If he does complete the move, it could spell bad news for Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The same report suggests that the Armenian’s place in the United side will be most under threat by Griezmann’s arrival, with Mourinho likely to play the 27-year-old behind the striker – a role he has been deployed in regularly for his national side.

The news will perhaps not come as a great surprise to United supporters, many of which have noted Mkhitaryan’s poor form in recent weeks. Having missed last weekend’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle entirely, perhaps there’s more to this one than just speculation. Time will tell.
