"We've just had some news through that Helenius will relinquish the European title rather than face Chisora," Sauerland told the Daily Mirror.
"We are looking at the next in line and that's Joshua.
"I will look to sit down with Eddie over the coming days and see if we can get this done.
"Dereck is up for the fight, he's ready for April 9 if we can do it. We know that is when Joshua is fighting."
Joshua, who has won all 15 of his pro fights by knockout, has one eye on a possible world heavyweight shot this year - and Chisora will be his toughest test to date.
Chisora is a former British, Commonwealth and European champion himself and has fought for a world title before.
