Sometimes it seems as though Alan Pardew is some clever parody in the mould of his namesake Partridge. Like the Steve Coogan/Armando Iannucci creation, ‘Pards’ has a habit of inviting mockery through his smug behaviour, extreme self-confidence and delusions of grandeur.
Alas who can forget the Crystal Palace man boogying away in May at the FA Cup Final, after Jason Puncheon had given the Eagles a late lead – only for Manchester United’s Juan Mata to wipe the smile off his face three minutes later. It was pure comedy gold at the 55-year-0ld’s expense, and the whole nation loved it.

He was at it again over the weekend at Twickenham, where he was present to watch New York Giants beat Los Angeles Rams 17-10 in front of a 75,000 sell-out crowd.
During the live television coverage, he was asked to explain the difference between managing a Premier League side and an NFL team, and his response was straight out of Ian Rush’s book of Captain Obvious soundbites.
Echoing the Liverpool legend’s alleged response that “living in Italy is like being in a foreign country” when asked about his time at Juventus, Pardew had a similarly insightful opinion about American football.
“It’s almost like a foreign sport,” he explained, blowing the tiny minds of armchair viewers everywhere.
