Ajax agree £6.5m compensation package with family of Abdelhak Nouri

Ajax have agreed to pay 7.85m euros (£6.54m) to the family of Abdelhak Nouri after "inadequate" medical treatment left the Dutchman with serious permanent brain damage. Nouri, who was 20 at the time, suffered a cardiac arrest during a friendly against Werder Bremen in July 2017. An investigation - which took place after the Dutchman's family sued the club - found that Ajax's medics spent too long attempting to clear his airways and were too late in using a defibrillator.

Eredivisie giants Ajax have paid for Nouri's care since he suffered the cardiac arrest and confirmed that they will continue to do so.

Ajax general manager Edwin van der Sar said: "It is good that an agreement has been reached, so that we can conclude this.

"We all realise that the suffering for Abdelhak, and his loved ones, is not over. It remains a very sad situation, that's how we feel here at Ajax too."

Ajax retired Nouri's number 34 shirt and give the 'Abdelhak Nouri Trophy' to their best academy player at the end of each year.

Several of Nouri's former Ajax and Dutch teammates have adopted Nouri's shirt number (34) when signing for new clubs, including Justin Kluivert, Joël Veltman, Donny van de Beek and Anwar El Ghazi.
