The Supercomputer has spoken...

The football world is still reeling from FIFA president Gianni Infantino's sensational plan to sell off parts of the World Cup to private investors — and UEFA's seismic response, voting unanimously to boycott the tournament if it goes ahead.

With CONCACAF and the AFC also rejecting the plan, though stopping short of a full boycott, Infantino looks unlikely to have the support to push it through. That would open the door for UEFA to return well before the next World Cup in 2030.

But suppose it doesn't play out that way. Suppose UEFA are still out in the cold come 2030, who actually wins the tournament?

After all, aside from Argentina in 2022, every World Cup for the past two decades has gone to a European nation. And outside Europe and South America, no other confederation has ever produced a champion.

To find out what a UEFA-less World Cup might look like, we asked AI chatbot Claude to run a full simulation.

Group stage:

What AI chatbot Claude said: "Argentina and Brazil ease through. Morocco top their group in front of home fans, echoing how far that carried them even as neutrals in 2022. Colombia and Japan both advance with confidence."

Round of 16:

What AI chatbot Claude said: "Morocco beats Senegal in an emotional all-African tie on home soil. Argentina beats Mexico. Brazil beats South Korea. Uruguay edges Japan."

Quarterfinals:

What AI chatbot Claude said: "Argentina beats Colombia. Brazil beats USA comfortably.

"Morocco vs. Uruguay is the tie of the round hosts against history. I'd lean Morocco given the crowd and momentum, but it's close."

Semifinals

What AI chatbot Claude said: "Argentina vs. Morocco. Argentina's superior squad depth and knockout composure just about gets them through against a Morocco side riding an entire nation's energy.

"Brazil beats Colombia."

Final:

What AI chatbot Claude said: "Argentina vs. Brazil. Morocco's run as host makes this feel less like an asterisk tournament and more like a genuinely dramatic edition, centered on South America and North Africa instead of Western Europe.

"Argentina [to win], with Morocco as the story of the tournament and the closest thing to a real upset threat to the Argentina–Brazil duopoly."
