Remember the horrors of genocide or risk it happening again

Oli Dugmore

Genocide is not a one-off event, it is a continual project that does not stop

Arnesa Buljušmić-Kustura survived the Bosnian Genocide. Many of her family members didn’t, though, and as a lecturer and writer she has since devoted her life to reminding people of the horrors of genocide and educating them on the subject.

JOE caught up with her on Holocaust Memorial Day for a frank conversation on the unending threat of genocide. During our discussion she explains that genocide is a not a one-off event, and instead is a project, of which genocide denial – such as we continue to see with the Holocaust – is an intrinsic part.

It is because of this ongoing project that we must never forget these atrocities, for fear that they may happen again.
