The man charged with murdering Yorkshire MP Jo Cox appeared in court for the first time.

Tommy Mair, 52, gave his name as “Death to traitors, freedom for Britain” when he appeared in Westminster Magistrates Court on Saturday, according to the Huddersfield Examiner.

Mair appeared in a grey tracksuit in the dock after being charged with the murder of the Labour’s 41-year-old MP for Batley and Spen.

He did not answer when asked to confirm his address and date of birth.

Mair faces charges of murder, grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon.

Cox died of gunshot and stab wounds in hospital after an attack on Thursday afternoon outside her constituency surgery in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

Mair was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on Monday.
