Video footage has emerged which allegedly shows England cricketer Ben Stokes in a brawl outside a nightclub.

The 26-year-old is known to have been arrested following an incident in Bristol on Monday. Police have since said that he was detained overnight and released under investigation while further information is gathered.

The Sun newspaper has obtained and published footage which they claim shows Stokes throwing a series of punches at two men. The report also claims that Alex Hales, who Stokes had been on a night out with, can be heard calling for his England one-day international teammate to “calm down” in the minute-long video.

The Sun indicate that they have handed the footage to the police.

In response, the England and Wales Cricket Board released a short statement on Wednesday morning:

We have seen this footage for the first time tonight – when posted by The Sun. There is an ongoing police investigation, which will look at all available evidence, and we do have to respect that process.’

Despite being named by selectors in England’s Ashes squad for this winter on Wednesday, reports have suggested that his inclusion in the tour of Australia could now be in doubt. As well as being arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm, Stokes is also believed to have broken a finger in the incident.
