Sir Captain Tom Moore has passed away aged 100.

The army veteran inspired a nation last year during the first national lockdown as he completed 100 laps of his garden, raising £30m for the National Health Service in the process.

On Sunday, his family confirmed he had been taken into Bedford Hospital and had tested positive for Covid-19.

On Tuesday morning a statement was posted to Sir Tom’s official Twitter account, confirming he had passed away.

Tributes instantly started pouring in, with countless public figures hailing his inspirational actions throughout his 100-year life.

Gary Lineker said he led an “extraordinary life.”

Piers Morgan thanked him for his courageous efforts in World War II.

Labour leader Keir Starmer described him as a “beacon of hope for millions.”

Both English national teams in football and cricket paid their respects.

The NHS’ official account thanked him for supporting the institution in a time of need.

Susanna Reid said she was heartbroken for his family.

London Mayor said he is a “true hero, in every sense of the word, and will be mourned by millions.”

Liverpool Football Club’s official account hailed “an inspiration and a true hero,” adding: “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
