Tory MP Imran Ahmad Khan has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a teenager in 2008.

Khan denied groping the 15-year-old at a house in Staffordshire in January 2008, but was found guilty on Monday (April 11) after a week-long trial, the BBC reports.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, contacted the Conservative Party in 2019 after learning that Khan was standing for election.

When Khan was elected as the MP for Wakefield, the man went to the police.

The MP was charged in June last year, after which he had the whip suspended by his party. As a result, has has sat as an independent in the House of Commons, but was still a member of the Conservative Party.

A by-election is now almost certainly take place in his Wakefield seat, which he won in 2019 with a majority of 3,358.

Labour has called for Khan to immediately resign from his position as an MP.

A spokesperson for the party said: “Imran Ahmad Khan should immediately resign so a by-election can take place and the people of Wakefield can get the representation they deserve.”

If the 48-year-old is handed a custodial sentence of 12 months or more then he will be immediately removed as an MP, triggering a by-election in the constituency.

If the sentence is less than 12 months, a by-election could still be triggered if his constituents trigger a recall procedure.
