The Boston Coastguard confirmed a search and rescue operation is underway

A vessel used to take tourists on trips to see the Titanic shipwreck has gone missing, sparking a search and rescue mission.

The Boston Coastguard confirmed to the BBC that an operation is underway to locate the submersible.

It is not yet clear whether anyone was on board at the time it went missing.

Small submersible vessels sometimes take tourists to view the wreck in the Atlantic, which sits at a depth of 3,800 metres.

The passenger liner, which was the largest ship of its time, hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in 1912. More than 1,500 of the 2,200 people on board died in the disaster.

The shipwreck has been extensively explored since it was discovered in 1985.
