This is how long men and women wish sex would last

Ben Kenyon

This is probably something that will cause a few arguments between the sheets.

But how long should sex last? There are some people that love a good quickie and then there are others who probably like a good tantric marathon like Finch off American Pie.

A new study in America has delved into this age-old question in the name of finding out where men and women stand on the issue.

More than 14,000 people were asked online about how long they wish sex would last in a study by Kristen Mark, the director of the Sexual Health Promotion Lab at the University of Kentucky.

The Penis Perception Study aimed to explore attitudes about sex and male sexual functioning, according to Fusion (it was funded by a company that makes treatments for premature ejaculation, funnily enough).

The results were quite unequivocal – both men and women wished that their sex sessions were at least twice as long.

On average the male and female respondents said their sex sessions lasted about 10 minutes. But the men who carried out the survey said they wished it would last 20 minutes.

This was the same for women who revealed they wished sex would last 15 to 20 minutes, or even more.

Fusion says that while the average time for sex was between three and eight minutes, the results match up with previous research from Penn State University in 2008 which said they desirable duration was 13 minutes.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint, as they say.
