A classic Scottish beer is making a comeback, with Tennent’s bringing its stout back to pubs this September.
The new 4% stout has been created for draught serving and is designed to be smooth and easy to drink. It has a creamy finish and moderate bitterness, with Tennent’s describing it as having “a luxurious, medium-bodied mouthfeel with a velvety foam head”.
The beer is already being served at Glasgow’s Oran Mor and the Tennent’s Visitor Centre, with more pubs expected to add it to their menus later this month.
The new pint comes with its own branded glass, which has the word STOUT around the rim and features the famous red Tennent’s logo. Drinkers are encouraged to “split the T” when pouring it.
While the drink may be new to many customers, stout has been part of Tennent’s history for centuries.
The first batch was brewed at Wellpark Brewery in 1740, and the company went on to export its dark beers around the world during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Tennent’s still produces Export Stout for international markets, but the renewed popularity of darker beers has now brought the style back to Scottish pubs.
The company hopes the new pint can challenge Guinness and become a popular choice among stout drinkers.
Hazel Alexander, senior brand manager at Tennent’s, said: “Long before lager became synonymous with our name, stout helped build our reputation around the world, so bringing it back feels like a natural step.
“We’ve created a stout that’s smooth, creamy and full of character, while staying true to the quality people expect from Tennent’s”.
