Swiss Alps coach crash leaves multiple dead as emergency rescue launched

Rescue helicopters rushed to scene after deadly coach crash

The crash happened late on Thursday afternoon in Graubünden, south-eastern Switzerland, on the road between Susch and Zernez. 

The coach had travelled from the Netherlands earlier in the week and was visiting Switzerland on a day trip from Austria when it entered a roadworks section.

Police said the bus struck a safety barrier before leaving the road and overturning. The identities of those who died have not yet been released.

Three of the surviving passengers suffered serious injuries, while the others were treated for injuries ranging from minor to more severe. They were taken to hospitals by ambulance and rescue helicopter.

Dutch and Swiss leaders offer condolences

Seven helicopters from Switzerland and Austria were involved in the emergency response, alongside firefighters and the Plaiv road rescue service.

Authorities are now investigating exactly what led to the collision, with Graubünden police and prosecutors examining the circumstances.

Dutch officials and members of the royal family have expressed their condolences. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima said their thoughts were with everyone affected by “this great tragedy”, while Prime Minister Rob Jetten also stated that his thoughts to everyone involved. 

Swiss President Guy Parmelin said he was “deeply shocked” and sent his “sincere condolences” to the victims’ families.
