Princess Eugenie Names Baby Daughter Adelaide Elizabeth in Tribute to the Late Queen

Homenews

Princess Eugenie has revealed that her newborn daughter is called Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, announcing the name on Instagram on Monday alongside the first photographs of the two-week-old, one of them showing her older brothers holding her. The 36-year-old said the name honoured “three people we love and admire past and present”, among them her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Adelaide was born earlier this month at a hospital in Lisbon, weighing 6lb 9oz, and is Eugenie’s third child with her husband Jack Brooksbank after sons August, born in 2021, and Ernest, born in 2023, BBC News reported. She is not a Royal Highness and becomes 15th in line to the throne, moving ahead of her great-uncle Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh.

The meaning behind Princess Eugenie’s choice

Two weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her great-grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home.

Adelaide is reported to have been inspired both by Queen Adelaide (1792-1849), the wife of King William IV, and by Santa Maria Adelaide of Portugal, while Elizabeth is the tribute to the late Queen. The origin of Annina has not been made public. It is a choice in keeping with the revival of older baby names seen in recent years.

Buckingham Palace said at the time of the birth that the King and Queen “and other members of The Royal Family were delighted to be informed of the news”. Adelaide joins a growing younger generation of the family, following recent public appearances by the Prince and Princess of Wales’ children.
