‘My husband gave my cat away to a shelter without my permission – now I’m filling for divorce’

‘So the husband was basically jealous of a cat’

A woman is supposedly divorcing her husband over a cat.

She claims he gave her feline companion, Benji, to an animal shelter without her permission.

In a post on Reddit last month, the anonymous wife, from the US, asked users if she was overreacting over the incident, which is more serious than it may sound, as she believes the cat is the reincarnation of her late father.

The woman explained in her post that after her dad passed away she was “feeling very down, like I had a hole that I couldn’t fill”, so adopted a cat.

“I rescued him when he was so small he fit in the palm of my hand and have had him for two years,” she explained, before her story took a more unpredictable turn.

“This may sound crazy to some, but I really believe Benji is the reincarnation of my dad,” she wrote.

“When I look into his eyes, I feel something more than a cat. Like a cat born with a human soul. All the timing adds up, it all makes sense to me at least. Even if I am crazy the thought brings me comfort and I don’t see anything wrong with it.”

Her husband, the woman said, found her attachment to the cat “strange and unhealthy”, in short, “my bond with the cat freaks him out, and makes him uncomfortable that I truly believe he’s my dad’s soul.”

The woman said the cat had provided her with endless comfort.

The woman then went on a girls’ trip with her sisters and mum, and while away she was away her husband re-homed the cat, “without my permission”.

Having failed to find the car on her return, having frantically searched inside and outside her home, the woman’s husband tells her Benji is “staying with a friend”.

When she wrote the first post, the woman had been led to believe her cat was with her husband’s co-worker and his wife – who they occasionally dine with.

When she called the co-worker, the man told he had been given the cat “fair and square” and refused to return it.

“My husband had no right, the cat has always been only mine,” the woman explained. “I adopted him, I raised him, I care for him, I’m the only one who ever spends any money on him. I am at a loss right now.

“Benji has never been through anything like this and I can only imagine the stress he must be feeling right now. I know I sure am.”

In a follow-up post a day later, the woman explained how she spoke to the co-workers wife who, “had no idea what I was talking about”.

The husband later confessed he gave Benji to a local animal shelter.

The woman managed to get the cat back, but the incident ruined her marriage.

“I took him (Benji) straight to my sister’s house, where I will also be staying for the time being,” the woman explained.

“My sister had been through divorce and has remarried, so she will help me get all my ducks in a row and prepare to file for divorce.

“I am heartbroken, but also incredibly thankful that my poor boy is now home safe!”

The woman said she hasn’t been home or seen her husband since.

“My family has supported me in my decisions and they are all willing to do whatever it takes to help me when I may need them.”

Reddit users came out in support of the woman.

One wrote: “It’s always surprising to me that people will do shit like this and never once think ‘hmmm, this might end my relationship’.”

Another said: “Both husband and co-worker are pieces of ****.”

A third person added: “So the husband was basically jealous of a cat thanks to which she’s a functional human being to this day. What a dickhead. I’m glad she’s divorcing him, he’s way more unhinged than he thinks she is.”
