Major UK festival cancels summer events after ticket sales fall short

A decade-old UK festival series has cancelled all three of its planned summer 2026 events, just weeks before they were due to begin, due to low ticket sales.

As if the cancellation wasn’t disappointing enough, many fans are now struggling to get their money back.

The refund process has become increasingly complicated, with customers claiming that companies involved are passing responsibility between each other.

For the past 10 years, Heritage Live has built a reputation for its multi-day summer concert series, bringing live performances to some of the country’s most beautiful historic locations.

The 2026 edition was set to be one of its biggest yet, with a star-studded line-up planned from 19th to 23rd August featuring the likes of Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Eric Clapton, Lionel Richie and Ricky Martin among others.

However, on 13th July, Heritage Live announced on Instagram that the entire concert series had been cancelled, sharing a lengthy statement with fans explaining the decision.

The statement explained that the team had been working behind the scenes to secure an investment and equity package that would help support the festival through what had been an “extraordinarily tough year.”

However, that final source of support reportedly fell through at the last minute, leaving the organisers unable to move forward with the events.

They explained that the rise of major multinational companies had pushed up costs across the board, from suppliers and artists to staffing.

Combined with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and wider financial uncertainty, this resulted in ticket sales falling below expectations for all of the planned shows.

The organisers described the cancellation of the 2026 events as “absolutely devastating”, while apologising to everyone who had already purchased tickets.

‘Both companies are refusing to take responsibility for refunds’

Although Heritage Live explained the refund process on the Instagram Post, many ticket holders have found getting their money back far more complicated than expected.

According to the statement, ticket holders who purchased through official agents including Ticketmaster, See Tickets, AXS, Gigantic, Ticketline or Skiddle should keep their transaction receipts for the refund process.

However, many fans have since claimed they have struggled to get their money back, with some accusing both See Tickets and the organisers of passing responsibility between each other.

Although Heritage Live advised customers to contact their “ticket provider” to arrange refunds, See Tickets directed buyers back to the festival organisers in an email sent shortly after the cancellation announcement, telling them to get in touch with Heritage Live directly.

According to Kevin Doyle, a TikTok user who had purchased a ticket to see Christina Aguilera, See Tickets informed customers that “the funds received from all tickets had already been paid to Heritage Live”.

As a result, the ticketing company explained that it was unable to issue refunds directly to buyers.

Instead, See Tickets stated that responsibility for processing refunds remained with the festival organisers.

It also provided an email address for ticket holders to use when requesting their refunds.

However, Kevin claimed that his attempt to contact the provided address was unsuccessful, with his email being returned with a “cannot be delivered” error.

Other ticket holders said they experienced similar problems, with some claiming that contacting Heritage Live only resulted in receiving the same original statement as an automated reply.

Another account wrote: “Just received the same [email]! not sure what to do but got a feeling it may be a battle to get any money back!”

Adding to the frustration, Kevin claimed that Heritage Live had disabled comments across its social media platforms and appeared to be unreachable at the time.

They also reportedly edited the caption on their cancellation announcement, stating that: “Ticket refunds will be processed by your ticket agent. If you experience any difficulties obtaining a refund, as per any transaction using your card, you are able to claim a refund for services not provided from your Credit Card Provider or Bank.”

Customers were also advised to contact their card issuer if they were unable to secure a refund, allowing them to dispute the payment directly.

This could include making a Section 75 claim for credit card purchases over £100 or requesting a Chargeback through their bank for debit card payments.

See Tickets breaks silence on refund confusion

When contacted, a spokesperson for See Tickets confirmed that the company had only acted as the authorised ticketing agent for the 2026 Heritage Live events.

The spokesperson explained that the decision to cancel the events was made solely by the promoter, adding that responsibility for issuing refunds remains with Heritage Live.

They said this was because the promoter had not returned the ticket sale proceeds to See Tickets, preventing the ticketing company from processing refunds directly.

They added that customers would be contacted shortly with instructions on how to claim their refunds, emphasising that See Tickets remained committed to providing the best possible service, even in challenging circumstances.
