Monkeypox declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization following a surge in cases

Monkeypox has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO) after a surge of cases.

While Monkeypox has been established in parts of central and west Africa for decades, the disease was not known to spread significantly to other parts of the continent or the wider world. But after outbreaks in more than 70 countries, WHO have declared it constitutes a global health emergency.

Such a declaration means it’s considered an “extraordinary event” that could spread to further countries. It also warrants a global response, similar to covid-19. Other previous emergencies include 2014’s Ebola outbreak, 2016’s Zika outbreak and the ongoing effort to eradicate polio.
