A four-month-old baby has died after it was pushed off a roof by a monkey.

The tragic incident took place in the village of Dunka in Uttar Pradesh, India. The baby had been with his parents when the group were attacked by a troop of monkeys.

Nirdesh Upadhyay, 25, was on the roof terrace of his home with his wife and son when the primates surrounded them.

Nirdesh was carrying his son but when they made an attempt to escape, he stumbled and dropped the newborn.

According to the Mirror, a monkey then grabbed the baby and threw him three stories off the roof before either parent could stop the tragedy unfolding.

They rushed downstairs to help their son but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local police have launched an investigation into the accident, and a local wildlife team has been sent to investigate the troop of monkeys.

Uttar Pradesh is home to a large population of rhesus monkeys, which roam freely in and around urban areas.

Mostly, the primates cohabit with humans peacefully, but this is not the first documented case of them attacking people.

In February, a five-year-old girl was killed by a troop of monkeys in the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh.

The Times of India reports that Narmada Kishore was playing with her friends near Nakatiya river when the monkeys attacked her and began biting her.

Her father said: “The monkeys were quite aggressive and had bitten my daughter almost everywhere. When I reached the spot she was crying for help.”

The girl was taken to hospital but died from blood loss.
