Michael Schumacher has made his ‘first public appearance in 11 years’ at his daughter’s wedding.
The seven-time Formula One world champion suffered life-changing injuries during a skiing accident in 2013 but was present at his daughter, Gina-Maria, 27, and husband Ian Bethke’s wedding according to The Mirror.
The former racing driver requires round-the-clock care following his accident in the French Alps over a decade ago.
At the time, he was skiing with his son when, despite wearing a helmet, he hit his head on a rock.
He was airlifted to Grenoble Hospital where he underwent two surgical interventions before being placed in a medically induced coma for several months.
The 55-year-old returned to his home at Lake Geneva in September 2014 where he has been cared for by his doting wife Corinna and their team of medical professionals ever since.
Schumacher’s condition has been kept private ever since with only a few friends and family able to visit him.
The F1 legend witnessed the celebrations at his family’s £27m villa in Majorca. The ceremony was considered ‘ultra-private’ with guests leaving their phones at the door upon arrival, but Schumacher was able to watch his eldest child walk down the aisle.
It lasted approximately half an hour according to Majorcan newspaper Ultima Hora. The wedding started at 4.15pm and the bride and groom said ‘I do’ at around 4.45pm.
They reported that the guests were also treated to a banquet and a party with a live country music band.
Gina-Maria posted a picture with her new husband on her Instagram account with the caption: “Forever yes to you, yes forever.”
Ralf Schumacher, Michael’s brother was also in attendance despite reportedly being kept in the dark about his sibling’s care.
