McDonald’s to remove ‘tasteless’ sign outside crematorium

Some have seen the funny side in the advert placement

McDonald’s has confirmed it will remove a sign advertising one of its burgers after it was branded as “tasteless” due to its location opposite a crematorium.

There are a whole host of items on the menu that the fast food chain could have chosen to advertise on the sign outside Penmount Crematorium in Cornwall – the McCrispy was probably not the best option to go for.

The burger itself is not problematic, and as a recent addition to the Maccies menu it’s unsurprising it’s had a big advertising campaign.

But placing a poster for the burger outside a building where the dead are burnt in furnaces is quite the faux-pas.

The unfortunate positioning of the advertisement may have gone unnoticed, if it wasn’t for the fact it is located right underneath a big sign reading ‘crematorium.’

As reported by CornwallLive, this has led some to described it as “tasteless.”

One woman, whose mother-in-law was cremated at the establishment last year, told the publication: “Although I can see the funny side, it is tasteless and I’m sure some grieving family members won’t like to see it when visiting Penmount for the funeral and cremation of a loved one.”

But others have acknowledged the dark comedy of the sign.

One person said how funny you find the advertisement “will probably depend on how long ago you followed the crematorium sign wearing a black tie.”

When CornwallLive shared the picture on their social media channels, the response was “largely greeted with hilarity.”

One person said they “fell of the chair laughing” at the sign, whilst someone else couldn’t resist commenting with a “I’m lovin’ it.”

McDonald’s has now confirmed it will be removing the advert.

After being shown a picture of the sign, a spokesperson for the chain said: “We were unaware of the road sign in the vicinity of this bus stop. However, in light of the concerns raised by CornwallLive, we have asked for our advertisement to be removed.”

Cornwall Council, which runs the crematorium and owns the bus shelter, said it was unable to comment on the matter.
