The government have announced a big change is coming.
The government have announced a change, which will particularly affect those who buy alcohol in shops and bars, will come into place later this year.
The move, which has just been announced by ministers, is that you will now be able to get your driver’s license on your smartphones to be used a form of ID.
Sky News reports that the digital driving licenses will be found in a new digital wallet which will run on a government app and will be accepted as a form of ID for buying restricted items such as alcohol.
The digital ID’s can also be used when voting in elections and, of course, for proving someone’s right to drive.
Science Secretary Peter Kyle said the app “will mean that every letter or identity document you receive from the government could be issued to you virtually”.
The app will aim to make the use of government services easier.
Some of the services which it plans to make easier involve applying for childcare and benefits, finding apprenticeships, or reporting a lost passport.
It’s been rumoured that an AI chatbot could be added in the app to help people find answers to ‘complex but niche questions’.
Physical documents will still be available and accepted however the government plans to offer digital alternatives for all of their services by the end of 2027.
Mr Kyle added: “Along with CDs, the Walkman and flip phones, the overflowing drawer rammed with letters from the government and hours spent on hold to get a basic appointment will soon be consigned to history.
“GOV.UK Wallet will mean that every letter or identity document you receive from the government could be issued to you virtually.
“For people who choose to use GOV.UK Wallet, they will find it easier to prove they’re entitled to benefits or check their age when buying alcohol or DIY equipment, with more security and trust than ever before.”
Several countries have already introduced digital licences such as Australia, Denmark, Iceland and Norway.
