Lorry crashes through gates of Russian embassy in Dublin

Police are investigating an incident of criminal damage

A man has been arrested after a lorry crashed through the gates of the Russian embassy in Dublin on Monday.

Irish police said the vehicle hit the gates of the embassy on Orwell Road about 1.30pm.

Video circulating on Twitter shows a lorry, branded with Desmond Wisley Ecclesiastical Supplies, reversing towards a set of black gates before crashing straight through.

Protests have been taking place at the embassy in recent days following the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.

A garda spokesman said an incident of criminal damage at the property was being investigated and that the arrested man has been taken to Rathfarnham garda station.

The Russian embassy is yet to comment on the incident.

The incident comes after Ireland was named on an official Russian government list of countries it deems “unfriendly” to Russia.

Last Friday, Father Fergal McDonagh rang into LiveLine to talk to presenter Joe Duffy as he threw red paint at the gates of the embassy.

“I’m actually outside the gates of the Russian Embassy in Orwell Road in Dublin,” Father McDonagh said.

“I’m about to throw paint at it.

“I won’t be the first and I won’t be the last.”
