A number of Isis-linked jihadists have reportedly been mauled to death by wild animals including lions and crocodiles while hiding out during a battle in Mozambique with pro-government forces over multi-billion dollar gas reserves.

The insurgents – labelled Isis-Mozambique by the US – were killed after attacking villages in Cabo Delgado province in north Mozambique. The terrorists had murdered people and burned down their homes in the attacks, MailOnline reported.

Mozambican forces said that they had captured four jihadists who were involved in recruiting and radicalising people and said 16 more had died. Local police commander Bernardino Rafael said that while some had died from gunshot wounds, others had been attacked by snakes, buffaloes, lions and crocodiles.

“Some of them died having been hit by bullets from our forces and others due to attacks by animals like snakes, buffaloes, lions and even crocodiles,” he told residents, The Times reports.

On Wednesday, he met with residents of the Quissanga district in the northern Cabo Delgado province of the southern African nation. “They are dying from gunshot wounds… Many of them [were] wounded by our weapons. But even animals also contribute to the death of the Islamist insurgents,” he added, according to a report by BBC World Africa.

Violence in the province has been escalating since 2017 over liquified natural gas (LNG) reserves worth billions of dollars. The largest project – a $20b investment – is said to be led by French firm, TotalEnergies, but that was suspended in March last year after a raid on the coastal town Palma.

According to the European Union, the conflict has resulted in approximately 4,000 deaths, 950,000 displacements and 1.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance.

Since the start of the violent extremist insurgency, people’s homes have been burned to the ground as the jihadists rampaged through villages.
