Khan has been calling for elections in Pakistan after being ousted from power

Imran Khan has been shot in what his supporters are saying was an assassination attempt.

A gunman reportedly opened fire while the former prime minister of Pakistan was giving a speech to supporters at a rally in Wazirabad.

The former cricketer, who has been pushing for new elections after being ousted from power in April, was rushed away from the scene and his supporters said he had survived the attack.

Khan has been delivering impassioned speeches at gatherings across the country and was was six days into a march from Lahore to Islamabad in his drive to bring early elections to the country, when the shooting occurred.

Sky News’ Cordelia Lynch, who was at the scene, said a Sky News producer was standing close to Khan and saw the moment the politician was shot.

The Guardian said, via Reuters, that Khan had been shot in the foot.
