Iconic beer returns to UK supermarkets 20 years after being discontinued

A new generation of drinkers can now enjoy Double Diamond

Originally brewed by Samuel Allsopp & Sons in 1876, Double Diamond became one of Britain's biggest-selling drinks throughout the 1950s, '60s and '70s, before being discontinued in 2003.

At its peak popularity, the beer was advertised in Piccadilly Circus with the slogan 'A Double Diamond works wonders'.

On behalf of Allsopp's, Kirkstall Brewery recently relaunched the beer for the pub scene, but now supermarket shoppers can get their hands on a bottled four-pack (440ml) for £5.75.

Jamie Allsopp, re-founder of Allsopp & Sons, said in a statement: "Double Diamond is our A-list star. This sessionable Pale Ale is the next iteration of Double Diamond and we hope will find a place in the affections of new drinkers, as well as those that haven't tasted it in 30 years."

The latest iteration of the product has an alcoholic strength of 3.8% and is made from Citra, Columbus and Mosaic hops.

For the pub-going readers, here are some of the boozers that you can order a pint of Double Diamond in the UK: The Princess Royal (Notting Hill), The Barley Mow (Mayfair), The Mason's Arms (Clanfield), The Last Heretic (Burton upon Trent), and The Bluebell (Kirk Langley).

Meanwhile, it was revealed earlier this month that Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda customers will soon be financially rewarded for taking back their empty plastic bottles.

Launching in October 2027 across England, Northern Ireland and Wales, this environmentally-conscious initiative follows in the footsteps of more than 50 other countries, including the Republic of Ireland, Sweden and Germany, which boast a average return rate of 90% (per The Mirror).

Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, chief executive of charity Keep Britain Tidy, said of the news: "A Deposit Return Scheme really is a silver bullet that will get plastic drinks bottles and aluminium cans out of our parks, off our streets, and away from our rivers and seas.

"Depressingly we litter, burn or bury millions of drinks containers each and every day. This legislation will end all that, save the taxpayer millions in clean-up costs and give recycling a real shot in the arm. Backed and paid for by producers, this method of retrieval and recycling is tried and tested the world over so at Keep Britain Tidy we are putting out the bunting that this government is committed to make it happen, for us all."
