A helping hand for those aged 60 or over

Iceland has implemented a new rule to help over-60s out with their shopping bills in the winter months.

The frozen food giant will be giving those over the age of 60 a 10 per cent discount on their shopping bill. The policy will apply to all purchases at both Iceland and The Food Warehouse outlets every Tuesday, and has no spending limits.

To get the discount, shoppers need only show a valid form of ID to prove their age. This includes a Senior Bus Pass, Driver’s Licence, Senior Railcard or Freedom Pass, Belfast Live reports,

Speaking about the policy, Iceland’s managing director Richard Walker said: “We are so pleased with how well the over 60s discount has been received by the public and love hearing stories from customers who are benefiting from the discount.”

Walker added: “The cost of living crisis continues to cause distress in the everyday lives of these customers and that’s why we want to keep doing what we can to support them.”

When the scheme was launched in May 2022, some 150,000 customers made the most of it on the first day. This equated to more than a third of the total shoppers who went to Iceland or The Food Warehouse.

This isn’t the only rule the company has introduced to give a helping hand. Iceland is also helping emergency workers and Blue Light Card holders by offering them a special online discount. Eligible shoppers can get £3 when they spend £60 or more.

To get the discount, customers need to log into their Blue Light Card account, retrieve their unique code, and then apply it at the checkout on Iceland’s website. Additionally, Iceland provides a one-off discount for students via Student Beans, where eligible customers can get £6 off when they spend a minimum of £45.
