Couple win lottery jackpot twice in one week

They won two lots of $1 million

A couple managed to win a lottery jackpot twice in one week – all because the husband was in trouble with his wife.

The couple from Dapto, New South Wales, Australia, were awarded AU $2 million for winning the two division one prizes on the Monday Lotto after the husband purchased two identical tickets for his wife that scored them $1million each.

The husband explained that he was in the doghouse because he had forgotten to purchase a ticket for the draw the week before.

So, to make it up to her, he bought two tickets with the same numbers that his wife always used.

He explained: “I forgot to put my wife’s numbers on last week, and she wasn’t too happy with me. So, this week I thought I’d put them on twice to make up for it.

“My wife has played these numbers for almost three decades and has always said they’d be drawn one day,” he told Lotto.

The wife was excitedly checking the results on Tuesday morning with no idea that her husband had bought an identical ticket.

The pair drew the winning numbers 29, 44, 4, 18, 35 and 45 with supplementary numbers 10 and 32, 9News reports.

The odds of winning division one, based on one standard game, are 8.15 million to one.

“Lo and behold, this morning she kept crossing off number after number on her ticket, and once we realised we’d won $1 million on one ticket, I thought I should probably tell her about the second identical ticket too,” he said.

The wife screamed when she found out about the initial $1m win, but when her husband revealed the second ticket, she almost passed out.

“I can’t believe this has happened to us,” the husband said.

The new millionaires admitted that they don’t need the massive winnings to be happy, instead choosing to support their family and go on a holiday.

“It won’t take much to make us happy,” the wife said.

“I can buy my daughter a house, I can set up the children and grandchildren for the future.

“Once we’ve done that, then we can enjoy whatever is left.

“I’d love to travel around Australia and see all the parts of our country I haven’t seen.”
