Officials confiscated 799kg of cocaine, 75kg of meth and 1.6kg of heroin
Authorities in the US have stumbled upon an underground smuggling tunnel on the US-Mexican border that runs the length of six football fields.
American authorities discovered an enormous tunnel complete with reinforced walls, electricity, ventilation and a rail system last week and are now obligated by law to fill it in with cement.
According to a federal criminal complaint filed in US district court in San Diego, officers began making traffic stops in the Otay Mesa industrial area after staking out a house they believed was being used to stash drugs.
Upon further investigation, they discovered a hole carved into the floor connected to the tunnel that ended in Tijuana, Mexico.
“It’s estimated to be about 1,744 feet long, 61 feet deep, with a diameter of about 4 feet at its widest point,” said U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California Randy Grossman according to local outlets.
Officials confiscated 1,762lb (799kg) of cocaine, 165lb (75kg) of meth and 3.5lb (1.6kg) of heroin from the property and related vehicles while six people aged between 31 and 55 were arrested on federal drug conspiracy charges. If found guilty, they could face life in prison and a $1m fine, according to the BBC.
We need to secure our southern border.
Violent cartels are smuggling in drugs and weapons into our country that are killing dozens of innocent victims every single day. https://t.co/eW83werp14

“We allege that the defendants were driving into the garage and loading or dropping off cardboard boxes full of drugs to further the movement or distribution of drugs throughout the united states,” said Grossman.

“There is no more light at the end of this narco-tunnel,” he added. “We will take down every subterranean smuggling route we find to keep illicit drugs from reaching our streets and destroying our families and communities.”
