Weinstein is already serving a 23-year prison sentence
Harvey Weinstein will be charged with two counts of indecent assault against a woman in London.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said Wednesday that the charges related to incidents in August 1996.
Rosemary Ainslie, head of the CPS Special Crime Division, said in a
statement that the service has authorised the Met Police to charge Weinstein "following a review of the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police in its investigation".
She added: "The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.” It is extremely important there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."
The 70-year-old former Hollywood producer is serving a 23-year prison sentence following his February 2020 jury conviction in Manhattan for sexual assault and rape.
The case remains the highest-profile trial in the #MeToo movement against sexual misconduct by prominent men.
Weinstein is awaiting trial in Los Angeles on other alleged sex crimes from 2004 to 2013 and has pleaded not guilty.
Weinstein has denied any non-consensual sexual encounters.
Meanwhile,
Weinstein on Tuesday filed a lawsuit in New York against the Fiat Chrysler company, which is now part of Stellantis, claiming $5 million in compensation for an accident he had in 2019 in a Jeep.
