Local officials have encouraged tourists in France to consider a new destination

The French President Emmanuel Macron has summoned his ministers in an emergency meeting.

The ongoing fire, only 15 kilometres away from Bordeaux, has rapidly taken over the region of Gironde, four folds the size of Paris.

As the sixth largest French urban area, the government is considering evacuating all of Bordeaux’s one million inhabitants.

With the wildfire having taken the lives of one citizen, as well as two firefighters responding amid a major emergency response, all in the matter of a week.

The UK has brought this to the attention of holiday goers in advising British tourists to ‘check ahead’ if they plan to travel in the affected areas.

The Foreign Office has updated their travel advice for both France and Spain, urging travelers to stay informed.

French authorities have evacuated campsites, tourist accommodation and some residential areas. 

Access to affected areas may be restricted and roads may close at short notice, with further evacuations taking place.

Spanish authorities on the other hand have declared a national emergency because of wildfires in parts of Madrid and Ávila. 

There are also reports of wildfires in other inland areas of Spain.

419-square-kilometres engulfed in flames as UK warns British tourists to ‘check ahead’

The French government has taken steps to keep tourists away from popular vacation spots.

Highways to Arcachon, Cap-ferret and Le Porge are currently blocked. 

Alongside firefighting ground equipment, the authorities have deployed water-dropping-aircrafts.

This includes French military transport planes that are ‘bombing’ the terrain with thousands of litres of water. 

Spanish holiday spots such as Avila, Valencia, Toledo and Castellon have also suffered due to wildfire disruption. 

From west Madrid along the eastern coast of Spain, 116,000 inhabitants have been relocated.

"We urge tourists not to come to this region, at least until the situation is under control. 

“I encourage tourists who are already here to consider another destination," says local official Sophie Brocas.

Travel agency industry body ABTA told the Mirror: "For people due to travel, they should keep in touch with their travel provider

"We would also advise people scheduled to travel to check the Foreign Office advice for travel to France and Spain.”
