She is standing for the Police and Crime Commissioner role in North Yorkshire, which was vacated by the departure of Philip Allott over comments he made after the murder of Sarah Everard.
Allott had suggested that women needed to be more "streetwise" in the wake of Everard's death.
He told BBC Radio York: "Women, first of all, need to be streetwise about when they can be arrested and when they can't be arrested. She should never have been arrested and submitted to that.
"Perhaps women need to consider in terms of the legal process, to just learn a bit about that legal process."
He later resigned because of his comments.
