Payment announced as part of a package of new measures worth £15bn
Every UK household will get an energy bill discount of £400 this autumn as part of a package of new measures to tackle soaring prices, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced Thursday.
The poorest households will also get a one-off payment of £650, Sunak said following warnings millions could be left struggling if energy prices rise again in October as expected. Ofgem said Wednesday that bills could jump by £830 to £2,800 a year.

Sunak said he had offered “significant support” for the whole UK in a package of new measures worth £15 billion. The payments will be partly funded through a 25 per cent windfall tax on oil and gas firms’ profits which have soared in recent months.
The handouts for Brits come a day after Sue Gray released her damning report into Downing Street lockdown parties that features several pictures of the prime minister.
Announcing the support in the Commons, Sunak said the government would also offer more targeted help to pensioners and the disabled.
