Donald Trump has said he’ll send Hillary Clinton to jail if he becomes president

During a heated Presidential debate on Sunday evening, Donald Trump claimed he would imprison Hillary Clinton if he were to win the Presidency.

The debate, which was the second of three televised head-to-head between the two candidates, saw Donald Trump go on the offensive following a week to forget.  In the wake of a video showing him making sexually aggressive comments towards women, the withdrawal of support from high-profile GOP members and Robert de Niro's denunciation of him, the Republican candidate looked to regain some of the ground he had lost to Hillary Clinton in recent days. Clinton approached the debate with the attitude of not losing rather than pushing for an outright win and this was reflected in her performance somewhat. It's not that anything that Trump said had any real meaning or significance, he bumbled under a couple of policy questions, gave a weak response to the groping tape question and he failed to make any real connection with the audience. However, he did launch a series of stinging attacks on Clinton, some of which were let pass without rebuttal by Clinton. One in particular attack stands out in our minds, and that was his threat that if elected, he would have Hillary Clinton thrown in jail.

Speaking at the debate last night Trump said to Clinton:

"If I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation. There has never been so many lies, so much exception.There has never been anything like it. We will have a special prosecutor. I go out and speak and the people of this country are furious. The long time workers at the FBI are furious. There has never been anything like this with emails. You get a subpoena and after getting the subpoena you delete 33,000 emails and acid wash them or bleach them. An expensive process. We will get a special prosecutor and look into it. You know what, people have been—their lives have been destroyed for doing one-fifth of what you have done. You should be ashamed."

Clinton then responded by claiming that Trump was lying:

"Everything he said is absolutely false. It would be impossible to be fact checking Donald all the time. I would never get to talk and make lives better for people. Once again, go to Hillaryclinton.com. You can fact check Trump in realtime. Last time at the first debate we had millions of people fact checking and we will have millions more fact checking. It's just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country."

Trump retaliated by saying: "Because you would be in jail." Despite Trump attempts, Clinton was still deemed to have won the Presidential debate. A CNN poll found 57 per cent of people feel Ms Clinton won the debate, compared to 34 per cent of voters who felt Donald Trump performed best. Among people who had previously been undecided about who they would be casting their vote for, Clinton also won narrowly by 44 per cent to 41 per cent.
