Trump brings back explosive 2020 election allegations

US President Donald Trump used a 25-minute address to the nation on Thursday to revive his long-standing claims about the security of the 2020 presidential election

During the speech, he once again accused China of interfering in the vote, despite previous US intelligence assessments finding no evidence to support those allegations.

Trump alleged that China carried out what he called "the largest compromise of election data in history".

He also revealed that he would declassifying a series of intelligence documents which he claimed show Beijing illegally accessed the personal details of around 220 million registered American voters, including names, home addresses and other voter registration information.

According to Trump, the documents expose what he called "shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure".

However, the material released alongside the address has raised questions about those claims.

Many of the documents remain heavily redacted, either contradicting the allegations or are unrelated to US election infrastructure altogether.

Trump also accused members of the US intelligence community of intentionally withholding information about the extent of China's alleged activities ahead of the 2020 election.

The address is expected to strengthen Trump's push for Republicans in Congress to support new election laws requiring stricter voter identification and proof of citizenship.

However, the legislation has yet to move forward, remaining blocked in the Senate due to continued opposition from Democratic lawmakers.

Responding to the allegations, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington rejected the claims, stating that China "has never and will never interfere in the presidential elections of the US".
