Dozens of celebrities ‘liked’ Depp’s statement following his trial win

A number of celebrities have appeared to remove their likes from Johnny Depp’s celebratory statement that he posted after his defamation trial win against Amber Heard.

Depp sued his ex-wife Amber Heard for $50m for defamation over an op-ed she wrote in 2018 in which she discussed the subject of domestic abuse.

Depp and his lawyers argued that the Washington Post piece falsely implied that Heard was physically and sexually abused by Depp while they were married from 2015 to 2017, despite not naming him, and that this impacted his ability to work.

Heard countersued Depp for $100m, accusing him of orchestrating a smear campaign against her and is asked for immunity from the claim.

At the start of June, the jury in the Virginia trial found that Heard defamed Depp on three counts, and ordered her to pay $10m in compensatory damages and $5m in punitive damages to Depp.

Following the verdict, Depp posted a statement on his Instagram account in which he said the “jury gave me my life back.”

Throughout the trial, several celebrities voiced their support for the Pirates of the Caribbean actor, with Kate Moss taking the stand to support him and Paul McCartney continuing to project videos of him during concerts.

A number of celebs liked Depp’s celebratory statement as well, many more than did Amber Heard’s statement.

However, it now appears that many A-listers have withdrawn their likes from the post.

Cross-referencing the likes from a list that a Reddit user had compiled following Depp’s statement, Twitter user @k4mil1aa pointed out the names that no longer ‘like’ the post.

This includes Bella Hadid, Orlando Bloom, Robert Downey Jr, Sophie Turner and Sam Fender.

Fender had already become embroiled in controversy related to the actor. After the trial verdict, he was pictured in a pub with Depp, and posted a picture in which he called the actor a “hero.”

The singer later apologised for the post and its “disrespectful” timing.

In recent days, thousands of documents have been unsealed revealing information that both legal teams tried, and failed, to get included in the trial.

This included a number of potentially damaging text exchanges between Depp and Marilyn Manson, and attempts from Depp’s legal team to include Heard’s “brief stint as an exotic dancer” in the proceedings.

The documents also revealed claims from Heard’s side that an “erectile dysfunction condition” caused him to become “angry and agitated”, something they argued was “absolutely relevant” to her accusations of sexual violence.
