British troops are training for a scenario to take back the Falkland Islands as tensions rise between the UK and Argentina.
As per reports from The Times, soldiers are taking part in training exercises in the Falklands which replicate a mission to take back the islands after a potential Argentinian invasion.
The outlet reported that around 150 British Paratroopers joined locally trained reservists to take part in a six-day training exercise which is intended to emulate the amphibious Operation Sutton landings of May 1982 which pushed back Argentina's invasion.
All this comes in the backdrop of rising tensions between the UK and Argentina, and, of course, a war previously fought over the islands back in 1982.
While things had gone relatively cold on the sovereignty front, it all started to get heated again in April 2026, following reports of a leaked Pentagon email suggesting the US could readjust its backing of the UK in the Falklands in an attempt to force support for the Iran War.
In July, Argentina protested a British Navy ship which allegedly made movements not in accordance with bilateral agreements with the news being announced just hours after Argentina beat England in the World Cup semi-final.
On 3 September, Argentinian President Javier Milei made a televised speech reasserting the country's claim to the Falkland Islands - this was robustly pushed back by the British government.
He once again reiterated the claim on 23 September 2026 during his address to the United Nations General Assembly.
At the end of September, Milei issued the UK a two-week ultimatum, threatening legal action over plans to drill for oil under the name Project Sea Lion in ocean around the Falklands.
After this ultimatum expired at the start of this week, Argentina filed a request with the international maritime tribunal seeking measures to stop the UK-authorised oil activities.
They also issued red notices for a number of individuals involved in the project which the UK has asked Interpol to reject.
All threats and claims from Argentina are unlikely to faze the UK, who settled the islands before Argentina was even formed as a country.
