Hijack alert sparks major security operation

Passengers on an Air India flight from Frankfurt to Delhi were temporarily taken off the aircraft after a security alert forced the plane to make an unscheduled landing in Jaipur.

The Boeing 787-9, operating as flight AI2030, landed at 9.45am and was moved to a separate area of the airport while security teams investigated.

The alert was reportedly linked to a 7500 squawk code, which pilots use to signal a suspected hijacking or unlawful interference.

Indian media reported that the crew contacted air traffic control and requested permission to land at the nearest airport as a precaution.

Once the plane was on the ground, all passengers disembarked and underwent security checks.

Officers searched the aircraft and examined the passengers’ luggage, with the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) also taking part in the inspection.

Both pilots were removed from the plane as required by security procedures.

India’s National Security Guard (NSG), the country’s federal counter-terrorism and special operations force, was also placed on standby in Delhi, News18 reported.

Air India yet to release statement

Authorities have since completed their checks and allowed passengers to return to the aircraft. However, the cause of the alert has not yet been confirmed.

Assistant commissioner of police Shiv Dayal said airport officials had contacted police after the plane made its emergency landing, according to The Times of India.

An airport official told Hindustan Times that the incident involved a rumour of a hijacking, not a bomb threat.

The official, who spoke anonymously, said an investigation was ongoing and it was too early to give a full account of what happened. Air India has not yet issued a public statement.

The diversion took place a day after Nuremberg Airport suspended flight operations following a similar alert.
