A Russian drone struck a train at Yahodyn, 2km from the Polish border, shortly after Boris Johnson and a group of senior European security officials had travelled along the same line.
Nobody was hurt over the drone strike.
The drone hit the train's engine at Yahodyn as all passengers had already been evacuated on order just 15 minutes before the strike, said state railway company Ukrzaliznytsia.
The former PM was returning from a conference in Kyiv alongside other European national security advisers, including UK's Jonathan Powell, on a different train on the same line.
In response to the offencive, Russia said it had struck "railway infrastructure" in western Ukraine.
Ukrzaliznytsia was blunter, saying "quite possibly, the target of this drone could have been the diplomatic train", and that the service had left earlier than expected because of a timetable change made "due to constant threats of Russian strikes".
Former CIA director David Petraeus, on another train at the station at the time, called the experience "terrifying".
He told the New York Times: "This is the act of a truly barbaric leader trying to terrorize Ukrainian civilians."
Former Swedish PM Carl Bildt, also returning from Kyiv, said passengers on his train were told to prepare to evacuate before being cleared to continue.
Boris Johnson has not confirmed the details of his own journey, but told the Daily Mail: "In these train attacks, we see the bared teeth of a cornered rat."
The story led several of Monday's front pages.
It is the latest incident in a war that keeps spilling towards Nato's borders, after Russia warned of catastrophic consequences for the British public and a cyber attack on a UK power plant.
