Black Panther star Connie Chiume has died at the age of 72, her family have announced.
A family statement on social media reads: “The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume.”
The statement added that Chiume passed away at Garden City Hospital. The family have asked fro privacy.
Her son Nongelo Chiume told Newzroom Afrika that she had been admitted for a “medical procedure” before her death.
A multi-award winning actor, the South African had starred in a number shows from her homeland, such as Gomora, Zone 14 and Rhythm City.
But to most of the world, she was best known for her role as Wakandan Tribal Council member Zawavari in Black Panther.
She also appeared in the film’s 2022 sequel, where her character becomes Wakanda’s Elder Statesman.
Chiume also appeared in Beyoncé’s Disney musical film based on The Lion King, in which she played Simba’s mother, Sarabi.
South Africa’s public broadcaster SABC News described her as a “beacon of hope” in their tribute, whilst the South African government said in a post on X that her “outstanding work will always be remembered.”
She leaves behind four children – two sons and two daughters, the BBC reports.
