BBC Radio presenter Andy Ball dies aged 62 after 30 years on air

Colleagues and listeners have paid tribute to him

BBC radio presenter and reporter Andy Ball has died aged 62, BBC Merseyside announced.

The local radio station announced the news via a post on their Facebook page where they shared a collage of photos of their beloved colleague.

The post read: “We’re sad to have to tell you that our friend and Colleague Andy Ball has passed away. Andy worked for BBC Merseyside for nearly 30 years as a Presenter, reporter and part of the management team.

“He loved the river and enjoyed nothing more than getting out into the communities right across the whole of Merseyside.

“We will miss him dearly and send all our love and condolences to his wife Lynn and family.”

Fans flocked to the comments to offer their condolences. On listener said: “I am so sad to hear this news. Having worked at Radio Merseyside for a few years, Andy was always so generous with his time and patience with everyone.

“He truly loved Liverpool, the station and all the people in it. Such a lasting impact that he will have had. Sending my best wishes and all my thoughts to his family and the RM family, as I know that you all will be hurting too.”

A second said: “Such sad news…..and quite a shock. Andy was always good to listen to and a true gentleman. My condolences to Lynn, and Andy’s family, friends and colleagues. May he rest in peace.”

Another added: “Very sad news, an excellent all round broadcaster, condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.”

While a fourth said: “He always came across as a friend on the air, a very knowledgeable and clever friend but always a friend. My condolences to his wife, family, friends and colleagues.”

Ball presented the Saturday Breakfast on BBC Merseyside as well as Paths in Time before taking early retirement.

Former station editor, Andrew Bowman worked with Ball for around five years and referred to him as a ‘brilliant ambassador for the radio station’ adding he was ‘phenomally supportive’ of his colleagues.

He said: “He was so generous with his time – and that is a characteristic that remained, he just always had an ability to be available to help people.

“He really loved these shows and getting out and about on outside broadcasts in general as it was a great way to meet Radio Merseyside listeners face to face.

“He’ll be greatly missed by everyone connected with BBC Radio Merseyside.”
