A stop by police in Catford has resulted in one of the biggest cash seizures in recent years.
Officers uncovered more than £4 million in cash and a kilo of cocaine after the stop sparked a wider investigation.
The discovery happened on Wednesday night when officers stopped a vehicle they considered suspicious.
While searching the car and the 54-year-old driver, they found a shopping bag containing £35,000 in cash, raising concerns about the source of the money.
The man was arrested on suspicion of possessing criminal property, but officers continued their investigation by searching his home.
Inside the address, they found a further £4 million in cash hidden across multiple bags in two bedrooms, as well as 1kg of Class A drugs.
Commander Paul Brogden from Specialist Crime said the scale of the seizure demonstrated the importance of proactive policing in tackling serious and organised crime.
“The arrest highlights the vital role stop and search, including stopping suspect vehicles, can play in helping officers to identify criminal activity.”
He said the result was a reflection of the persistence and commitment of the officers involved, adding that police would continue working to disrupt those who profit from illegal drugs and cause harm within local communities.
