Rachel Reeves announced further benefit cuts in yesterday's spring statement which will plunge 250,000 people into poverty.
Reeves is facing backlash from Labour MPs after the government's own impact report revealed the staggering statistics that 250,000 people, including 50,000 children are likely to be thrust into poverty.
There was outrage as the chancellor used her spring statement to announce yet more welfare cuts which, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), are now set to impact 3.2 million families.
Back bench MPs said that they would vote against the measures.
However, Reeves claims the figures have not taken into account the impact of more people going into work.
She says they will be doing some work on this ahead of the budget in the autumn and adds that the government is investing £1bn on getting more people into work.
She said: "And so we’re confident that the changes that we are making and the support that we’re providing to get people into work, will result in more people having fulfilling careers paying decent wages and of course, that’s the best way to lift families out of poverty."
Reeves has been wrapped up in controversy recently after accepting £7,500 from a friend to buy clothes and free tickets to a Sabrina Carpenter concert.
This latest news came amid gloomy economic news, with the financial watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), confirming it had halved the UK’s growth forecast from 2 per cent to 1 per cent for the next year.
While estimates on growth were increased for following years they were still cumulatively less than predicted just six months ago when Ms Reeves gave her Budget.
The OBR also warned that tariffs set to be imposed by Donald Trump next week could wipe out growth estimates.
