TikTok user Serena Trueblood seemingly spurred the conversation, detailing how former bassist Jason Newsted appeared to do a Nazi salute onstage. The band also mocked the then-recent death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Many fans accused singer James Hetfield of racism after Trueblood shared a clip of Guns N' Roses backup singer Roberta Freeman who alleged that Hetfield referred to rapper Ice-T using a racially charged slur. Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose accused the band of racism at the time, which was also included in the TikTok video. https://twitter.com/bloodwoodflower/status/1556419791165980675 Metallica's fans were very vocal in the comments, with many suggesting it was a "different time." "The fact metallica welcomed and defended all the new fans that came from the stranger things fandom and they've gone and THROWN IT BACK IN THEIR FACES…" wrote one Metallica fan on Twitter, referencing how the band pushed back against their fans who were trying to gatekeep their music. While fans and right-leaning publications have branded the situation as "cancel culture", others have pushed back on this idea because, as one fan put it, there's a difference between "Cancel culture and consequence culture."
