While many may rightly assume this is just a fun little prank by a few locals taking advantage of the Google Maps van (we've all tried) - and some joked “Did Mario just join Ghostface and the gang?" - another warned: “That’s the cartel. You wanna stay far far away from those masks.”
The rationale behind this theory is that the image is thought to have been taken around the same time a Mexican cartel hitman named Luis Alonso Quintana - commonly known as “El Guacho” - was arrested in connection with the death of three women and six children from back in November 2019.
As per some further web-sleuthing shared in The Sun, the victims were members of the LeBaron family, a group of dual Mexican and American citizens who lived in a fundamentalist Mormon community.
Just last month, 'El Cano' - the alleged leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, based out Nuevo León - was arrested in a chicken shop in Guadalupe. Cano was arrested after a shootout with police which resulted in two casualties and shocking footage reportedly showed people fleeing the scene after the cartel dropped a bomb from a drone.
The incident was attributed to a new turf war between the Sinaloa and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel - if these four individuals are indeed drug traffickers, it is unclear which outfit they belong to.
