Video games based on the Aliens movies can be extremely hit or miss.
For every absolute must-play like Alien: Isolation, we get something like Aliens: Colonial Marines, which should have every copy put into an air-lock and blown out into space.
With the arrival of the first trailer for Aliens: Fireteam, it looks like the developers are going down a new route with the Aliens franchise, although a route that has been taken by many, many other games before.
As per the game's official website, here is all the info we know about it so far:
"Set in the iconic Alien universe, Aliens: Fireteam is a cooperative third-person survival shooter that drops your fireteam of hardened marines into a desperate fight to contain the Xenomorph threat.
"Play a pivotal role in the epic events that occur 23 years after the original Alien trilogy as a Colonial Marine stationed aboard the USS Endeavor, battling terrifying Xenomorph threats.
"Face overwhelming odds against over 20 enemy types, including 11 different Xenomorphs along the evolutionary scale from Facehuggers to Praetorians, each designed with their own intelligence to ambush, outsmart and eviscerate vulnerable marines.
"Choose from five unique classes - Gunner, Demolisher, Technician, Doc and Recon - each with their own special abilities and character perks. Utilise an extensive arsenal of 30+ weapons and 70+ mods/attachments in your effort to eradicate the Alien threat."
So it looks like we'll be going down the path of World War Z, in terms of a name-recognised franchise getting a plot-swap for an online co-op shooter.
All we can do now is hope that it is more Isolation than Colonial Marines in terms of quality.
Aliens: Fireteam is set for release this summer, playable on PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
