Holy sh*t, the BioShock movie is really FINALLY happening

There are some serious names tied to the project already

After over a decade of rumours, false starts and collapsed productions, the BioShock movie is finally really happening — and it's being headed up by Netflix. Netflix confirmed that director Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) and writer Michael Green (Logan, Blade Runner 2049) have signed on for the project which is thought to be an adaptation of the first game. The original 2007 title is considered one of the best ever made, telling the story of Jack; having survived a suspiciously timed plane crash, he discovers the underwater city of Rapture, which has been kept secret from the rest of the world. He is contacted over a radio by a man named Atlas, who claims to also be trapped in the city... When the game was released, it sold in the millions and won countless Game Of The Year awards and spawned two equally successful sequels in BioShock 2 and BioShock: Infinite. The franchise has been synonymous with fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk and ready-made movie tropes like the big-bad and creepy little girls straight out of a horror film ever since. Safe to say Hollywood took notice early on. [caption id="attachment_355794" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Credit: " - BioShock 1, BioShock 2 & BioShock: Infinite[/caption] In 2008, Universal announced an adaptation by Gore Verbinksi (The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean), using the same green screen technology from 300 as well as Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's Sin City to visualise the city of Rapture. In 2010, the project had moved on to director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intacto), but producers and creators reportedly couldn't agree on the $200 million budget for a movie that would be so violent, it would basically mean no teenagers could get in to see it. Another director was brought in - their identity never revealed to the public - but Ken Levine, the creator of the BioShock games, decided to pull the plug on the project altogether. Following the massive success of Deadpool, all parties involved noted that a big-budget, adults-only blockbuster was financially viable, but it would still be several years before the project would be picked up... And now here we are. Francis Lawrence is currently filming The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the prequel to the original series (he directed three out of those four movies, too), which is scheduled for release on the streaming platform in November 2023. Once that production is done, Lawrence will be straight on to BioShock. But the big question now is... who will play Jack? Any guesses or suggestions?
