Paul Scholes has been linked with a return to Manchester United
With a major restructure expected at Old Trafford this summer, the names of several former players have been mentioned as potential candidates for a number of new positions.
A major overhaul of United’s recruitment strategy has been prioritised, with Darren Fletcher linked with a role in the new set-up, and the club is also on the lookout for its first ever technical director, with Mike Phelan the new favourite for that job.
Scholes is the latest legendary figure who has been linked with a gig with the Red Devils and while the position isn’t specified, the Metro report that the former midfielder is in the running as the club aims to introduce someone who knows the ins and outs of Manchester United who will be tasked with assisting in the decision-making process at board level.
Scholes, who most recently managed Oldham Athletic for just over a month, was recently charged with misconduct by the Football Association for an alleged breach of betting rules.
Since retiring in 2013, Scholes has been one of the most vocal critics of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era at Old Trafford and if the latest reports are to be believed, he will be given the opportunity to make a change to how the club operates.
His former long-time midfield compatriot, Roy Keane, last week scoffed at the suggestion that he might be a decent candidate for the technical director at United because, well, he’s Roy Keane.
