Training for cold water acclimatisation in a freezing, unheated pool

JOE

JOE recently engaged in cold water acclimatisation training with endurance athlete Ross Edgley

Edgley recently swam the entire British coastline as part of the Great British Swim. It was a brutal feat which took its toll on Edgley’s body.

Now, he’s in training for Red Bull’s Neptune Steps, an event combining 400 metres of swimming with climbing over seven canal locks. This demands immense bodyweight strength as well as the ability to swim successfully in icy cold water.

Competitors need to be prepared for the freezing temperatures, making cold water acclimatisation training essential.

Our drills paired full lengths of an unheated pool with tricep dips to failure. We also took this as opportunity to ask Ross a few questions about training in extreme conditions and the benefits for a variety of body types.
